Aroma
In the opening, the tea reveals a delicate floral–citrus fragrance formed by the intertwining of Earl Grey’s bergamot and the distinctive rock-fragrance character.
As it unfolds, gentle woody notes from the Nanyang-style oolong emerge, accompanied by the warm, comforting herbal scent of aged citrus peel.
Taste
The first sip is clean and refreshing.
In the mid-palate, the layers gradually open up, revealing soft fruity sweetness and a hint of citrus brightness.
The finish is refined and pure, carrying the mineral quality characteristic of rock teas, rounded with the lingering sweetness of aged citrus peel.
Aftertaste
The aftertaste is long, steady, and composed, yet carries a touch of lightness and liveliness that reflects Singapore’s unique cultural character.
It is a contemporary cultural tea, ideal for enjoying in a banquet setting — savoured gently amid conversation and music.
At this art gala styled after British vintage aesthetics of the 1925 era, we present a cross-cultural tea blend — Oriental Earl Grey, crafted with dedication by Singapore’s century-old tea house, Pek Sin Choon. The evening’s British décor and Western-styled cuisine symbolise Singapore’s elegance, openness, and harmony as a multicultural society. This tea, in turn, expresses the same theme through taste:
Classical refinement and cultural heritage are never static — they renew themselves through continual exchange.
The 1920s was a golden age of artistic interaction worldwide. Jazz, the grace of British high society, and a surge of interest in Eastern art all resonated together during this era.
Oriental Earl Grey was born from this very spirit:
-
Earl Grey — an iconic symbol of British tea culture
-
Nanyang blended oolong — representing tea traditions carried to Singapore via the maritime routes
-
Rock-essence Wuyi tea — echoing the depth of classical Chinese tea
-
Aged citrus peel — bringing warmth, maturity, and an unmistakably Eastern touch
In a single cup, the essence of the 1920s is transformed into a flavour language:
a harmony where tradition meets modernity, East meets West, classical meets innovative.
Since its founding, Siong Leng Musical Association has carried the mission of bringing Nanyin both to Singaporean audiences and to the world.
Nanyin is “living ancient music” — intricate, elegant, and composed, with a deep, timeless Oriental resonance.
Yet Siong Leng does not merely preserve tradition. It boldly brings Nanyin into new cultural contexts, inviting dialogue with international audiences and contemporary stages.
Although tonight’s gala features a British vintage theme, it symbolises something deeper:
that all cultures, no matter their origin, can find a meeting point in Singapore.
For this reason, Oriental Earl Grey was chosen as tonight’s tea, carrying profound meaning:
-
A blend of Western Earl Grey and Eastern tea heritage
→ just as Nanyin finds new expressions in modern Singapore -
A classical flavour with a touch of contemporary lightness
→ reflecting Siong Leng’s balance of preservation and innovation -
Aroma rich in layers and depth
→ mirroring the complexity and beauty of Nanyin’s musical structure
This cup of tea is a gentle tribute to Siong Leng’s artistic vision.
Founded in 1925, Pek Sin Choon is one of Singapore’s rare tea houses that still upholds traditional hand-sorting and Nanyang blending techniques. Its philosophy naturally resonates with Siong Leng:
-
both are guardians of century-old craftsmanship
-
both treat culture as a mission, not a commodity
-
both are rooted in Singapore’s multicultural soil
Oriental Earl Grey was created out of this shared sense of purpose — a “cultural tea” designed not merely for flavour, but for meaning:
-
to preserve heritage rather than pursue trend
-
to infuse Nanyang identity, craftsmanship, and cultural warmth into a single cup
-
to let every guest experience the depth and inclusiveness of Singapore’s culture from the very first sip
Just as Siong Leng has safeguarded Nanyin without interruption for a century,
Pek Sin Choon has steadfastly preserved Nanyang tea traditions.
This tea stands as a symbol of the meeting of two cultural institutions.
